About Us

Momotaro Foods was set up by Nana Otsu Galloway in mid 2006 to serve the Japanese community in the North East of England, enabling them for the first time in a number of years to buy imported Japanese food locally. Nana's idea included the ambition to introduce Japanese food and food culture to the wider British community, which is not well provided with the opportunity to try Japanese food outside London.

Realising that not many British people have had the chance to try Japanese food, Nana decided to offer a range of simple recipes free to increase understanding of this exceptionally healthy cuisine, and allow people to prepare a genuine authentic Japanese meal at home.

The easiest way to allow people to access these recipes is this website, which allows you to download one of about fifty recipes, and buy any special ingredients you need to make the meal directly from the recipe page on the site.

The recipes are divided into five categories: Easy; 'A little more effort'; Vegetarian, Soups and Sushi. In addition to the recipes and ingredients, Momotaro Foods also sell specialist Japanese cookware, crockery, and cooking utensils.

For those of you who are already familiar with Japanese cooking, there is also a separate product range that includes all the recipe ingredients and a range of other products.

The additional products include snacks and nibbles such as rice crackers and wasabi peas, different sized bags of Japanese style rice, and instant foods like soups, noodles and curries - which are all very popular in Japan as quick meals and are very tasty.

Many Japanese meals use one or more core ingredients, that is Japanese soy sauce (called 'shoyu' in Japanese), cooking sake, Mirin (a slightly sweet sauce with a small alcohol content) and Dashi (a basic stock). Since these are so commonly used in Japanese cooking, Nana has bundled them together as a set of 'core products' boxed and at a very competitive price. This set could last for ten or more meals. You can also buy the core ingredients separately if you wish.
